There are 50 ponds capable of supporting fish and approximately 750 miles of fishing streams in the White Mountain National Forest . Trout populations are supplemented by stocking programs where necessary.

"Rivers and streams that are especially notable include the Swift River along the Kancamagus Highway, the East and West Branch of the Pemigewasset River, the Saco River , the Ellis and Wildcat Rivers, and the Ammonoosuc River. Those who prefer lake fishing can cast a line at Moore Reservoir on the Connecticut River, Big and Little Squam, Stinson Lake , and Echo Lake; and Profile Lake (fly fishing only).

Fishing licenses are available at more than 450 license agents throughout the state. Most agents are sporting goods dealers or provide services to sportsmen."*
